Your kart drives itself, so the whole game is timing your jumps. Use a single jump for small bumps and save the double jump for long gaps; jumping too early is the most common way to fall short. Boost pads are worth a small detour. First place gives three stars and more coins, so replay early tracks for an easy win and spend the coins on speed upgrades before you head to the volcano levels.
